On May 13th, the Canadian Broadcast Distribution Association will be holding a seminar in Toronto on advanced wireless, with a focus on rich media applications.

Content
The seminar will begin with a keynote address and overview from Dr. Pierre C. Belanger, Department of Communications, University of Ottawa, an expert in new media and emerging technologies. Dr. Belanger will be followed by Mr. Anthony Caruso, P.Eng., Director, New Broadcast Technologies, CBC Technology, who will provide an overview of Mobile TV standards and systems. This will be followed by a panel discussion with device manufacturers and wireless service providers to address: perspectives on video delivery (e.g. broadcast mode MobiTV, MediaFlo, ATSC-mobile, and download models); opportunities with the newly auctioned advanced wireless spectrum; on-deck, off-deck and "open system" phones and perspectives on business opportunities for rich media delivery to consumers.

Presenters
Pierre C. Bélanger is Professor in the Department of Communications, the Institute of Canadian Studies and the School of Information Sciences at the University of Ottawa. Pierre specializes in Canadian media & telecommunication industries and in the sociology of technological innovations. From 1998 to 2001, he was on secondment to CBC/Radio-Canada where he worked as Director of New Media for Radio-Canada. Over the past 4 years, he has been associated with Astral Media Radio Inc. where he is acting as advisor on emerging technologies. He frequently analyzes and comments on Canadian broadcasting and telecommunications policies and developments.

Anthony Caruso is the director of New Broadcast Technologies within CBC Technology. He is a professional engineer licensed in Quebec and Ontario and has been involved in a variety of engineering activities ranging from digital compression, television/radio production, to network technologies including the various aspects of high definition television developments. Tony is the vice-chair of the Technical Committee of the North America Broadcasting Association (NABA-TC), and represents CBC/Radio-Canada at the World Broadcasting Union-Technical Committee (WBU- TC).

Panel of cellular service providers and handset manufacturers is being assembled.

Location
The ˝ day seminar will take place at Rogers Communications, 333 Bloor Street East, Toronto.

Time
The seminar will start at 9:00 am with registration available at 8:30.

Fee
CBDA member organizations will have no charge for admission. We request that you distribute this notice throughout your firm and multiple registrations from any organization are encouraged. Non-members are also welcome at a charge of $60 plus GST.

On line registration will be available on April 20 at www.cbda.ca. Click here to register. While there is no admission charge for CBDA members, we require registration as seating is limited.

CBDA
The Association will be offering several ˝ day seminars over this program year as part of the education component of its Work Plan. It planned to have these seminars recorded for delivery to members who are unable to attend the event.
